Peaches and Miracle's Story Print E-mail

RGFR took in an emaciated Cremello mare about 2 weeks ago and sent her to foster care.  We suspected she was in foal on eval before her arrival.  According to her former owners calculations, her possible due date was to be sometime in early spring of 2010.

Upon veterinary exam it was discovered that Peaches has a tumor in the sinus cavity which has literally eaten a 2 1/2 inch hole in her jaw.  The veterinarian recommended euthanasia.  Peaches, the Cremello was slated to be humanely helped over the bridge, but due to an odd twist of events, she was not.  She was picked up and returned to RGFR and rescheduled for euthanasia.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered a "miracle" in the pasture.   Peaches gave it her all.  She was very weak (staggering to stand) and had no milk to give.  The little filly, named "MIRACLE" was a beautiful dark gray and was sent back to foster care where she was supplemented with cholostrum and started on milk replacer every 2 hours.

We did everything possible to try and save both.  Sometimes your all just is not enough.

WE WHO CHOOSE TO SURROUND OURSELVES
WITH LIVES EVEN MORE TEMPORARY THAN OUR OWN
LIVE WITHIN A FRAGILE CIRCLE,
EASILY AND OFTEN BREACHED.
UNABLE TO ACCEPT ITS AWFUL GAPS,
WE STILL WOULD LIVE NO OTHER WAY.
WE CHERISH MEMORY AS THE ONLY CERTAIN IMMORTALITY,
NEVER FULLY UNDERSTANDING THE NECESSARY PLAN ….

May they gallop lush green pastures together in good health, beauty and happiness.

With tears and great sorrow.
